I was just listening to the last full WRS they played on THID. It's on the Grateful Dead Movie soundtrack. It's a really great version and I can't understand why they would stop playing it. What are your favorite WRS preludes as well as full suites?

1974-06-18 is also a monster of course, as are 1974-06-28 and 1974-07-19

8/4/74 is one of the most climatic and intense versions ever performed imo. I've never heard such "lyrical" playing by Jerry on this song anywhere else!

Jubal (Hunter) Seamons made an awesome matrix that eclipses the DP version. Maybe you could convince him to get it to you somehow.

12/18/73 is my all-time favorite performance of the WRS. It's sublimely jazzed out...

"this is the quiet part folks." gotta love phil. gonna listen to this one very soon, i remember liking it a lot.

and yes, this is the perfect fall song from the GD catalogue.

edit: this might be the best version i've heard. i don't remember it being this good. i had to listen to it twice to make sure my ears weren't deceiving me. the delicate jazzy prelude had me instantly hooked in. by the time the jam built to a nice crescendo, i got goosebumps it was so good. the intense jam in the LIG part is unbelievable as well. i'll check out 73-09-15 next.

The version that's on DP7 from the Alexandra Palace in Sept. '74. It seems this tour was kinda hit & miss, but the performances on this release are all spectacular. The jam that starts after the last verse from about 14:30 on till the end is one my FAVOURITE passages of music they played during this tour. Listen to the 30 sec's from 15min to 15:30...sublime...

The 9/10/74 WRS is an amazing version, easily the finest of the Euro '74 tour, which imo was total garbage...

agreed. the '74 european tour was a low point for that year. perhaps the only low point.

The Weather Report Suite is such a great piece of music for this time of year.

I don't know about Best Ever or anything like that but this one is different with the flute on the Prelude and horns during Let It Grow -

I'm with you clashcity I can't say I have a favorite, but I really like the prelude with the flute, it is the perfect addition and I also enjoy the horns honking and squealing on the Let it Grow.

Indeed.

Check out the rest of the set... Horns are present all over the place. Martin Fierro and Joe Ellis.

Some cool stuff in Eyes and Sugar Mags!

I never dug too deep into it but it looks like he was present for a whole bunch of shows in Sept. 73.

Wake of the Flood was released on 09/15/73, which Fierro played sax and flute on. He toured with the boys for a little and then shortly after WOTF came out he joined Saunders-Garcia, and the Legion of Mary until '75 I believe. He's always been a great match for Dead's music, and his work with Jerry is very nice as well. One of the best guests they've ever played with for sure.

I've listened to all that is available from that tour multiple times and found the following versions with the horns to be extraordinary.

9/12- LIG
9/15-Eyes
9/17-LIG
9/21-LIG
9/26- Eyes,LIG
